Online Stopwatch With Lap Times

Use this free online stopwatch to measure elapsed time, pause and resume, record individual laps, view cumulative times, and identify your fastest and slowest laps.

::.

This online stopwatch measures elapsed time and displays hours, minutes, seconds, and hundredths of a second. Start, pause, and resume the timer without losing your progress, or record laps to compare individual intervals and cumulative elapsed times.

How to Use the Online Stopwatch

Press Start to begin timing. While the stopwatch is running, press Lap whenever you want to record an interval. Use Pause to temporarily stop counting, Resume to continue from the same elapsed time, or Reset to stop the stopwatch, return it to zero, and clear every recorded lap.

Individual Lap Time and Total Time

Each lap row contains two measurements. Lap time is the duration since the stopwatch started or since the previous lap was recorded. Total time is the complete elapsed stopwatch time at the moment that lap was recorded.

Fastest and Slowest Lap Highlights

After at least two laps have been recorded, the stopwatch compares their individual durations. The shortest lap is labeled Fastest and the longest is labeled Slowest. If every recorded lap has exactly the same duration, no potentially misleading highlight is shown.

How Pause and Resume Affect Lap Times

Paused time is not included in the stopwatch total or the current lap. When you resume, timing continues from the previously recorded elapsed value rather than starting again from zero.

Monotonic Elapsed-Time Measurement

The stopwatch uses the browser's monotonic performance clock to measure duration. This prevents manual changes to the device's calendar time or time zone from making the stopwatch jump forward or backward.

Using the Stopwatch in Another Browser Tab

Browsers may reduce visual updates for background tabs, but the stopwatch calculates elapsed duration from its time reference instead of adding a fixed amount on every screen update. When the page becomes visible again, the display refreshes using the measured elapsed time.

When to Use an Online Stopwatch

Use it for running, workouts, sports drills, study sessions, presentations, experiments, games, cooking, productivity exercises, practice sessions, and other activities that benefit from elapsed-time or lap comparisons.

Display Resolution and Timing Limitations

The stopwatch displays hundredths of a second, but browser scheduling, device performance, input delay, and the time required to press a button can affect real-world measurements. It is not a certified instrument for scientific, legal, medical, or competitive timing.

Private Local Operation

The stopwatch and lap calculations run locally in your browser. Elapsed times and lap records do not need to be uploaded to or stored on an ORVITech server.

How Is the Result Calculated?

Lap time = Current total elapsed time − Previous lap's total elapsed time

Stopwatch Lap Example

Suppose you record Lap 1 when the stopwatch reaches 32 seconds, then record Lap 2 another 18 seconds later. Lap 1 shows an individual time of approximately 32 seconds and a total of 32 seconds. Lap 2 shows an individual time of approximately 18 seconds and a cumulative total of 50 seconds. Lap 2 is highlighted as the faster lap.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start the online stopwatch?

Press Start. The stopwatch immediately begins measuring elapsed time.

Can I pause and resume the stopwatch?

Yes. Press Pause to temporarily stop counting and Resume to continue from the same elapsed time.

Is paused time included in the result?

No. Time spent while the stopwatch is paused is excluded from both the total elapsed time and the current lap.

What does the Lap button record?

It records the duration since the stopwatch started or since the previous lap was recorded, along with the cumulative elapsed time.

What is the difference between lap time and total time?

Lap time measures one individual interval. Total time shows the complete stopwatch duration when that lap was recorded.

Can I record a lap while the stopwatch is paused?

No. The Lap button records a result only while the stopwatch is running.

How are the fastest and slowest laps selected?

The fastest lap has the shortest individual duration, while the slowest has the longest. The cumulative total does not determine the highlights.

What happens when lap times are tied?

Laps tied for the shortest or longest individual duration share the corresponding highlight. If all lap times are identical, no fastest or slowest labels are shown.

Can I record multiple laps?

Yes. You can continue adding laps for as long as the stopwatch is running.

What does Reset do?

Reset stops the stopwatch, returns the display to zero, clears all laps, and changes the main control back to Start.

Does the stopwatch display milliseconds?

It displays two fractional digits representing hundredths of a second, also called centiseconds. It does not display all three millisecond digits.

Will the stopwatch remain accurate in a background tab?

The display may update less frequently while the tab is in the background, but elapsed time is calculated from a time reference and refreshes when the page becomes visible again.

Can changing my device clock affect the stopwatch?

Ordinary calendar-time or time-zone changes should not affect it because elapsed duration is measured with the browser's monotonic performance clock.

Will my stopwatch and laps remain after reloading the page?

No. Reloading or closing the page resets the stopwatch and removes its recorded laps.

Is this stopwatch suitable for official timing?

No. It is useful for general timing, practice, and personal comparisons, but it is not a certified instrument for official competition or other high-stakes measurements.

Are my lap times uploaded or stored?

No. Stopwatch timing and lap records remain within the current browser page and are not sent to an ORVITech server.
