Invisible Character Viewer
Reveal zero-width spaces, hidden Unicode controls, non-breaking spaces, tabs, line breaks, bidirectional marks, and other invisible characters in text.
Use this free invisible character viewer to find hidden Unicode characters inside text. Each recognized character is replaced in the result with a readable label and its Unicode code point while the surrounding visible text remains in its original position.
What Is an Invisible Character?
An invisible character is part of the underlying text even though it may not produce a visible symbol. Examples include zero-width spaces, non-breaking spaces, tabs, line endings, soft hyphens, directional controls, invisible mathematical operators, and Unicode filler characters.
Which Invisible Characters Can Be Detected?
The viewer recognizes common hidden and formatting characters such as tabs, line feeds, carriage returns, non-breaking spaces, soft hyphens, zero-width spaces and joiners, line and paragraph separators, word joiners, bidirectional marks and controls, invisible mathematical operators, the Braille blank pattern, the Hangul filler, and the zero-width no-break space.
How the Invisible Character Viewer Works
The tool scans the text character by character. When it finds a recognized invisible character, it inserts a label containing the character’s name and code point. For example, a zero-width space becomes [ZERO WIDTH SPACE · U+200B]. Every detected occurrence is included in the total count.
Why Hidden Unicode Characters Can Cause Problems
Invisible characters can make two strings look identical while their underlying values are different. This may affect searches, usernames, passwords, form validation, database values, source code, URLs, filenames, spreadsheets, copied documents, and automated text processing.
Bidirectional Unicode Controls
Bidirectional control characters can change the order in which surrounding text is displayed without appearing as visible symbols themselves. Revealing these controls can help explain unexpected text direction in multilingual content, filenames, copied text, and source code.
The Original Text Is Not Modified
The viewer creates a readable representation of the submitted text but does not alter the text in the input field. Copying the result copies the visible labels and code points shown in the report rather than silently copying the original hidden characters.
Private Browser-Based Processing
Your text is analyzed locally in your browser. It is not uploaded to ORVITech or sent to an external server for inspection.
How to Reveal Invisible Characters
Paste or enter the text you want to inspect and select Reveal Invisible Characters. Review the result to see the number, location, name, and Unicode code point of every recognized hidden character.
Invisible Character Example
The text HelloWorld may contain a zero-width space between the two words even though no gap is visible. The viewer reveals the underlying text as Hello[ZERO WIDTH SPACE · U+200B]World.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I find invisible characters in text?
Paste the text into the viewer and select Reveal Invisible Characters. Recognized hidden characters will be replaced with readable labels containing their names and Unicode code points.
What is a zero-width space?
A zero-width space is Unicode character U+200B. It can separate text internally without displaying a visible space.
What is a non-breaking space?
A non-breaking space is a spacing character that prevents an automatic line break at its position. The standard no-break space is U+00A0 and may look identical to an ordinary space.
Does the viewer detect tabs and line breaks?
Yes. It identifies tabs, line feeds, carriage returns, Unicode line separators, and Unicode paragraph separators as separate characters.
Why can one line break appear as two characters?
Some text uses a carriage return followed by a line feed for each line ending. In that case, the viewer correctly reports U+000D and U+000A as two separate underlying characters.
What are bidirectional control characters?
They are Unicode formatting controls that influence the displayed direction or ordering of text. They are commonly used for legitimate multilingual formatting but can also cause confusing results when inserted unexpectedly.
Can invisible characters survive copying and pasting?
Yes. Many hidden characters remain intact because they are part of the underlying text rather than visual formatting applied by the application.
Can invisible characters cause programming errors?
Yes. They can affect string comparisons, parsing, identifiers, validation, searches, source code, database values, and other operations that depend on the exact character sequence.
Does the tool remove invisible characters?
No. It reveals recognized invisible characters in a readable result. It does not modify or clean the original text in the input field.
What happens when I copy the result?
The copied result contains the visible character names and Unicode code points displayed by the viewer, making the hidden-character locations easy to share or document.
Does the viewer detect every possible Unicode character?
It detects a broad collection of commonly encountered invisible, spacing, directional, formatting, mathematical-control, and filler characters. Unicode contains additional specialized controls that may not be included.
Is my text uploaded or stored?
No. The text is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to ORVITech or stored on an external server.
