Online Diff Checker – Compare Text

Compare two blocks of text line by line and identify added, removed, and unchanged content in a clear, copyable diff.

This free online diff checker compares an original text with a changed version and produces a unified line-by-line result. Added lines appear in green with a plus sign, removed lines appear in red with a minus sign, and unchanged lines remain in their normal color.

How Does the Text Comparison Work?

The checker divides both inputs into lines and determines which lines are shared, removed, or added. It then combines those changes into one result so you can review the surrounding unchanged content along with every revision.

How to Read the Diff Result

A line beginning with + exists in the changed text but not in that location in the original. A line beginning with - was present in the original but removed or replaced. Lines beginning with two spaces are unchanged context.

Line-by-Line Comparison

The utility compares complete lines rather than individual words or characters. Changing one word within a line therefore displays the original line as removed and the revised line as added.

Case, Spacing, and Punctuation Matter

The comparison is sensitive to capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and other characters. Two lines that look similar may still be reported as different when their exact text does not match.

Compare Code and Structured Text Safely

You can compare source code, JSON, HTML, CSS, configuration files, logs, lists, Markdown, and other plain-text formats. The pasted content is displayed as text rather than executed as code.

Compare Drafts and Document Revisions

The checker is also useful for reviewing edited articles, notes, policies, contracts, instructions, transcripts, and document drafts, provided their contents can be pasted as plain text.

How Are Moved Lines Displayed?

The checker does not label a line as moved. If a line changes position, it will normally appear as removed from its original location and added at its new location.

Copy the Comparison Result

Use the copy button to save the complete unified diff as plain text. The +, -, and spacing prefixes remain in the copied result, so added, removed, and unchanged lines can still be distinguished without color.

Private Browser-Based Comparison

The comparison runs locally in your browser. The text you paste does not need to be uploaded to or stored on the ORVITech server.

Working With Very Large Texts

The checker has no intentional server-side document limit because processing occurs in your browser. Extremely large inputs can still take longer or use significant memory depending on your device.

Line Difference Example

If the original line is "The quick brown fox" and the changed line is "The quick red fox", the result marks the brown-fox line as removed and the red-fox line as added. Because this is a line-based comparison, only the changed word is not highlighted separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the green and red lines mean?

Green lines beginning with + were added to the changed text. Red lines beginning with - were removed from the original text.

What do the uncolored lines mean?

They are unchanged lines found in both versions and are included to provide context around the differences.

Does the checker compare individual words?

No. It compares complete lines. A word change causes the original line to appear as removed and the revised line to appear as added.

Is the comparison case-sensitive?

Yes. For example, Text and text are treated as different line content.

Do spaces and punctuation affect the result?

Yes. Changes to spacing, punctuation, or other characters can cause a line to be reported as different.

What happens if both texts are identical?

The result contains only unchanged lines because nothing was added or removed.

Can I compare source code?

Yes. You can compare source code, configuration files, JSON, HTML, CSS, Markdown, logs, and other text-based formats.

Will pasted HTML or JavaScript execute?

No. The utility treats the inputs and comparison result as text rather than executing the pasted code.

Can I compare Word or PDF documents?

You can compare their extracted text, but the utility does not directly read document files or compare visual formatting, images, comments, or tracked changes.

Does the checker detect moved lines?

It does not assign a special moved status. A relocated line normally appears as removed from one position and added in another.

Can I copy the diff result?

Yes. The copied plain-text result retains the + and - markers used to identify additions and removals.

Is my text uploaded or stored?

No. The comparison occurs locally in your browser and the entered text is not stored on the ORVITech server.

Is the online diff checker free?

Yes. You can compare text without creating an account or installing an application.
