Image Metadata Checker
Inspect an image for EXIF data, camera settings, capture details, GPS coordinates, dimensions, file information, and other embedded metadata without uploading it.
Use this free image metadata checker to inspect information stored inside an image file. Depending on what the file contains, the report may show camera and lens details, capture settings, dates, GPS coordinates, editing software, image dimensions, file properties, and additional EXIF, XMP, IPTC, or format-specific metadata.
What Is Image Metadata?
Image metadata is information stored alongside the visible pixels of an image. Cameras, phones, scanners, editing applications, and export tools may add metadata describing how the file was captured, created, modified, or saved. The amount and type of information vary considerably between files.
What Metadata Can the Checker Read?
When available, the checker can display the camera manufacturer and model, lens, original capture date, exposure time, aperture, ISO, focal length, flash information, software, GPS coordinates, and other embedded fields. It also reports image dimensions, resolution, megapixels, file size, MIME type, filename, and the file's last-modified value.
File Information and Embedded Metadata Are Different
The filename, file size, MIME type, dimensions, and file last-modified value are obtained from the selected file or browser. They are not necessarily embedded camera metadata. In particular, the file last-modified value may reflect copying, downloading, or saving the file rather than when the image was originally captured.
Why Do Some Images Have No EXIF Data?
An image may never have contained EXIF metadata, or the information may have been removed during editing, exporting, optimization, screenshotting, downloading, or social-media and messaging processing. Missing metadata does not mean that the image is fake, manipulated, or suspicious.
Can Image Metadata Reveal a Location?
Some cameras and phones can store latitude and longitude coordinates in an image. The checker displays those coordinates when readable GPS metadata is present. Location recording may have been disabled, and many applications and online services remove GPS information for privacy.
Metadata Does Not Prove Authenticity
Metadata should be treated as contextual information rather than proof. Metadata fields can be edited, copied, fabricated, removed, or become inconsistent during file processing. Camera details, timestamps, software names, and GPS coordinates do not independently prove when, where, or by whom an image was created.
Private Browser-Based Processing
The selected image is read locally in your browser. It is not uploaded to ORVITech or stored on an external server for this metadata check. The utility reads the file without modifying it.
How to Check an Image’s Metadata
Choose or drag and drop an image, then click Check Metadata. Review the report for file properties, dimensions, camera information, capture settings, GPS coordinates, and any other readable metadata embedded in the file.
Image Metadata Check Example
Suppose you select a photograph taken with a digital camera. If its original metadata remains intact, the report may show the camera and lens models, capture date, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length, dimensions, and GPS coordinates. If the photograph was downloaded from a social network that removed its metadata, the report may contain only basic file and image information.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is EXIF metadata?
EXIF is a metadata format commonly used by cameras and phones. It can contain the device model, capture date, exposure settings, lens information, image orientation, and sometimes GPS coordinates.
Can this checker determine where a photo was taken?
Only if the file contains readable GPS metadata. If latitude and longitude are absent, the checker cannot determine the location from metadata alone.
Does every image contain metadata?
No. Some images contain extensive embedded metadata, while others contain only basic format information or no readable embedded metadata.
Why is the original capture date missing?
The camera may not have recorded it, or the field may have been removed during editing, exporting, downloading, compression, or online processing.
Is the file last-modified date the same as the date the photo was taken?
Not necessarily. The file last-modified value may change when the image is copied, downloaded, edited, or saved. The original capture date, when available, is a separate embedded metadata field.
Can image metadata be changed or falsified?
Yes. Many metadata fields can be edited, replaced, copied, or removed. Metadata can provide useful context, but it should not be treated as conclusive proof of an image’s origin or authenticity.
Does missing metadata mean an image is fake?
No. Editing tools, websites, social networks, messaging applications, screenshots, and export settings commonly remove metadata from otherwise genuine images.
Does the checker modify the selected image?
No. It reads the available file information and embedded metadata without changing the image.
Is my image uploaded or stored?
No. The image is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to ORVITech or intentionally stored on an external server.
Is this the same as an AI image detector?
No. This utility reads file information and embedded metadata. It does not analyze visual patterns or claim to determine whether an image was generated by artificial intelligence.
